Return Policy
If displeased with a new flute or leather flute bag for any reason, contact me right away. With my approval, within 14 days of the sale, items in still new condition may be returned at the buyer’s expense for a nearly full refund. That is, I will refund the original purchase price less credit card transaction processing fees and/or shipping costs. As of 04/2023, charge card fees are no longer being refunded by my service provider.
Custom designed flutes and leather bags are considered final sale items and as such, are not subject to this return policy.
Introductory Flutes
My Introductory flutes are uniformly 3/4″ bore, Western Red Cedar flutes. Usually tuned as an A4, these flutes are distinguished by the lack of a tenon mouthpiece, embellishments or complex block designs. They ARE well tuned and as such, have my maker’s mark wood burned above a unique flute number and key on the underside of the mouth end. These are designed to be quality instruments which happen to be affordable.
### – Western Red Cedar, A4; $129
This is an example of an Introductory flute. They are made using Western Red Cedar. The block typically is topped with a thin layer of wood for decorative purposes which is on a layer of Western Cedar. The bottom layer is unfinished Eastern Red Cedar. In this instance, the block has layers of Western Cedar / Camphor / Western Cedar / Eastern Red Cedar. These flutes are usually less than 19″ long.
291 – Black Walnut burl, F5; $219
Flute #291 is Black Walnut burl. The mouthpiece is Figured Myrtle / Madrone burl. A Myrtle figure on Madrone burl / Eastern Red Cedar for the block. About 12 7/8″ long, this 1/2″ bore flute is tuned as an F5 (high).
317 – Western Red Cedar, C5; $209
Flute #317 is a closed end Western Red Cedar flute presented as a stylized Pileated Woodpecker. The block features a spalted Magnolia feather on Pink Ivory with Sycamore / Western Cedar / Eastern Red Cedar. About 22 1/2″” long, this 5/8″ bore flute is tuned as a C5 (high).
365 – Oak, B4; $129
Flute #365 – stubby Oak – 5-hole; no mouthpiece. Wood-burned feather decoration with a turquoise dot marking the spot where I would have added the sixth finger hole. About 12 1/2″” long, this 7/8″ bore flute is tuned as a B4. It is quite unusual to find a high-pitched flute like this with such a large bore diameter. Normally, I make B4 flutes using a 5/8″ or at most, 3/4″ bore. This flute was one of a series explicitly created to enable someone with severely arthritic hands to play a high-pitched flute comfortably.
384 – aged Cherry; B4; $249
Flute #384 is Cherry (Keystone Heights area, FL). The mouthpiece is Dogwood from Gainesville, FL. The block has a Moss Agate polished stone positioned vertically in Black Walnut on a base of Mahogany / Beech / Eastern Red Cedar. About 12 3/8″ long, this 7/8″ bore flute is tuned as a B4. The flute wood was aged using methods devised by furniture makers long ago.
400 – Leadwood; A4; $409
Flute #400 is Leadwood (Black and White Ebony mouthpiece). Leadwood carved hand (malachite inlay circle of life, faceted blue Topaz) on Black & White Ebony (thin) / figured Marindiba / Eastern Red Cedar serves as the block. About a 1/3″-wide, bore end mosaic inlay ring has Marble and Pipestone in a Malachite matrix. The overall length is 17 9/16″ long. This 3/4″ bore flute is tuned as an A4.
380 – Eastern Red Cedar, A4; $209
Flute 380 is Eastern Red Cedar with a with a Butternut mouthpiece. The block Sycamore / thin Eastern Red Cedar figure on Butternut / Eastern Red Cedar Tuned as an A4, this flute has a 7/8″ bore and is about 18 1/16″ long. Normally, I make my A4 flutes using a 3/4″ bore but in this instance, I wanted to see how a larger bore version sounds. Not too bad if I say so myself..
355 – Western Red Cedar, A4; $169
Flute #355 is Western Red Cedar with a with a spalted Sycamore mouthpiece. The block has a Healing hand inlay (Sleeping Beauty Turquoise) with Pipestone Circle of Life in spalted Sycamore / Eastern Red Cedar. Tuned as an A4, this flute has a 7/8″ bore and is about 19″ long.
381 – Ceylon Satinwood, G4; $389
Ceylon Satinwood with a Pistachio / Mulberry mouthpiece. The block has circular inlay of Sleeping Beauty Turquoise bed with Wampum shell and Lone Mountain Turquoise nuggets in Pistachio on Mulberry / Eastern Red Cedar. Tuned as an G4, this flute has a 7/8″ bore and is about 20 9/16″ long. Wampum shell (with Sleeping Beauty) inlaid below the nest was collected on North Carolina’s Outer Banks
425 – French Black Poplar, G4; $319
This is a French Black Poplar flute with a fiddleback Imbuia mouthpiece. The block has a French Black Poplar bear (Teal dye accent; One Euro coin embedded vertically) mounted on Imbuia / Eastern Red Cedar. Tuned as an G4, this flute has a 7/8″ bore and is about 20 1/4″” long. Malachite inlay borders for two bands with wood burned accents and Teal dye. 1″ band below finger holes, 1/4″ band above the nest area.
345 – fiddleback Imbuia, F#4 (Gb); $509
Fiddleback Imbuia flute with a Honduran Mahogany / Beech / spalted Sycamore mouthpiece. The block has a Honduran Mahogany tree stump figure (carved, wood burned; Sleeping Beauty Turquoise circle of life; faceted Citrine gemstone) sitting on spalted Sycamore / Eastern Red Cedar. Tuned as an F#4 (Gb), this flute has a 7/8″ bore and is about 20 1/4″” long. Decorations include Kingman Turquoise inlay representations of trees (intact upright, bent and broken) with an inlay band filled with Kingman chips. A broken tree (Eastern Red Cedar from Windsor, FL) with Kingman Turquoise accents stands in relief at bore end with wood burned accents. This flute was dedicated to recovery efforts for Hurricane Idalia (2023). The Eastern Red Cedar tree was knocked down in Windsor, FL by Hurricane Irma (2017).
359 – Brazilian Rosewood; F#4 (Gb); $1,889
Brazilian Rosewood with an Ambonya burl / Gainesville Dogwood mouthpiece, Flute #359 is tuned as an F#4. This flute has a 7/8″ bore and is about 20 1/16″ long. The block has a Rosewood / Amboyna burl figure (Kingman Turquoise inlay heart lines) on Dogwood / Brazilian Rosewood / Eastern Red Cedar. Three narrow bands of Kingman Turquoise (one below the nest; two below the finger holes) serve as simple but elegant accents.
Historically, this wood has perhaps been the species most frequently associated with the term “rosewood,” and with its strength, hardness, stability, beauty, and acoustic properties, it’s easy to understand why Dalbergia nigra has been used for everything from flooring to xylophone keys.
Due to high demand and limited supply of Brazilian rosewood, and its continued exploitation, it has been in the most restrictive category of endangered species. Not only is the lumber restricted from being imported or exported from country to country, but even finished products made of Brazilian rosewood may not cross international boundaries.
427 – fiddleback Imbuia, F#4 (Gb); $689
This is flute 427. Fiddleback figured Imbuia with a French Black Poplar / Gabon Ebony mouthpiece. The block has a carved Gabon Ebony feather with an Ebony riser on French Black Poplar / Ebony / Eastern Red Cedar. Tuned as an F#4, this flute has a 7/8″ bore and is about 22″ long. Decorative elements include an inlay ring – Travertine, Pipestone with Amazonite accent stones in a field of Kingman Turquoise.
Sterling Silver inlay dots representing a star field, extend from from the bore end up to the nest area. Hair pipe and silver beads with red crow beads are on deer leather laces.
270 – Wisconsin Beech; F4; $389
Flute #270 is Wisconsin Beech. There is a Black Walnut / Yellow Birch / Black Walnut mouthpiece and end cap. The forward leaning block has a Turquoise cabochon on Beech / spalted Maple / Eastern Red Cedar. Tuned as an F4, this flute has a 7/8″ bore and is about 22 3/16″ long. The Dragonfly inlay below the nest has an Azurite body and a Lone Mountain Turquoise in common opal head. The wings are Black Pipestone (Steatite).
429 – Camphor; E4; $449
This Camphor flute is #429. The mouthpiece is Marblewood / Cherry (Keystone Heights, FL). The block has a Plume Agate (rectangular) in Marblewood / Cherry on Cherry / Camphor / Eastern Red Cedar Marblewood / Eastern Red Cedar (Teal aniline dyed ends). Tuned as an E4, this flute has a 1 1/8″ bore and is about 22 3/16″ long. The bore end is aniline dyed cobalt / violet.
430 – fiddleback Myrtle; D4; $789
This flute (#430) is fiddleback Myrtle with a mouthpiece of Beech (Wisconsin) / Koa (thin). The block features a Sunset Jasper polished stone embedded in a Myrtle-clad Yellow Birch triangular figure on Koa / Eastern Red Cedar. Tuned as a D4, this flute has a 1 1/8″ bore and is about 22 1/2″ long. The inlay below the nest has Red Sonora Sunrise Jasper with a Lone Mountain turquoise nugget on a Kingman Turquoise inlay matrix in a sun blossom pattern filled with Kingman Turquoise.
433 – Mahogany; D4 (432 Hz; Equal Temperament tuning); $539
This is a 432 Hz flute with Equal Temperament tuning. Made of Mahogany, flute 340 has a Cherry / Black Limba mouthpiece. The block is a Cherry figure with lace holes on Mahogany (thin) / Black Limba / Eastern Red Cedar. Tuned as an D4, this flute has a 1 1/8″ bore and is 25 7/16″ long. Decorative elements represent sea fronds – Malachite outline inlay, upper carved texture. Coquina shell, Mother-of-Pearl with Malachite inlay band. There is a Malachite inlay frond on top of the block with Coquina shell, Mother-of-Pearl. Malachite circles are inlaid on both sides of the block.
340 – California Cottonwood with burl; D4 (432 Hz; Equal Temperament tuning); $429
This is a 432 Hz flute with Equal Temperament tuning. Made of California Cottonwood with burl, flute 340 has a Raintree mouthpiece. The block is a Cloud with rain figure (Honduran Mahogany; colored using Cyan aniline dye) mounted on Raintree (Monkeypod) / Eastern Red Cedar. Tuned as an D4, this flute has a 1 1/4″ bore and is only 23 1/8″ long. The distance from the mouthpiece to the bottom finger hole is just 403 mm (15.9″) and the span between finger holes is about 6 inches. As a result, this relatively deep sounding flute can be played by someone who doesn’t have especially long arms or large hands.
283 – Camphor; C#4; $469
Flute 283 is Camphor with a curly Mango mouthpiece. The block has a vertically mounted moss agate cabochon in Beech on Black Walnut / Yellow Birch / Eastern Red Cedar. Tuned as an C#4, this flute has a 1 1/8″ bore and is about 26 3/8″ long.Petroglyph figures observed at Petroglyph National Monument, NM. Twin birds in Pipestone and Black Pipestone (steatite) at bore end. The figure below the nest has a Lone Mountain Turquoise nugget, Sleeping Beauty Turquoise and Malachite.
341 – Raintree – aka: Monkeypod; C#4 (Db); $369
Flute 341 is Raintree. Also known as Monkeypod. The mouthpiece is Cottonwood with burl. The block is a Bear (Cottonwood – Pipestone heart lines, Sleeping Beauty Turquoise burl infill) on Raintree / Eastern Red Cedar. Tuned as an C#4, this flute has a 1 1/4″ bore and is 24 3/4″ long. The distance from the mouthpiece to the bottom finger hole is just 422 mm (16.6″) and the span between finger holes is about 6 1/2 inches. As a result, this is another deep sounding flute which can be played by someone who doesn’t have especially long arms or large hands.
406 – Western Red Cedar; C4; $329
Western Red Cedar with a Alaskan Yellow Cedar / Sapele mouthpiece. Flute 406 has a block of Sapele (thin) / Western Cedar / Eastern Red Cedar. Tuned as an C4, this flute has a 1 1/4″ bore and is 26 1/8″ long. The distance from the mouthpiece to the bottom finger hole is 452 mm (17.8″) and the span between finger holes is almost 6 3/4 inches. Finger holes are about 1 1/4″ apart with diameters ranging from 0.35″ to 0.27.” Western Red Cedar makes for a good large flute because the wood resonates pleasantly without being too heavy.
408 – Alaskan Yellow Cedar; C4; $439
Alaskan Yellow Cedar with a Claro Walnut / Camphor mouthpiece. The block features Claro Walnut inlay dots with Kingman Turquoise centers in Camphor / Black Walnut / Eastern Red Cedar. Tuned as a low C4, flute 408 has a 1 1/4″ bore and is 26″ long. The distance from the mouthpiece to the bottom finger hole is just 408 mm (16″) and the span between finger holes is less than 5 1/2 inches. This is another deep sounding flute which can be played by someone who doesn’t have especially long arms or large hands.
434 – Brazilian Pepperwood burl; C4; $659
This C4 tuned flute is Brazilian Pepperwood burl with a Beech / Marblewood mouthpiece. The block has a Pepperwood burl sweeping tail mounted on a Marblewood platform on Beech / Marblewood / Eastern Red Cedar. Flute 434 has a 1 1/4″ bore and is 27 1/2″ long. The distance from the mouthpiece to the bottom finger hole is 486 mm (19″) and the span between finger holes is about 6 1/2 inches. Yellow aniline dye accents the bore end of this surprisingly light weight, big bore flute.
242 – Honduran Mahogany; B3; $309
Honduran Mahogany with an Eastern Red Cedar / spalted Alder mouthpiece. The block for #242 has a Myrtle figure with two inlay Pecan dots and a Pink Ivory bar on Eastern Red Cedar. The 30 degree forward slant is important for this flute’s tuning as a low B. This flute has a 1 1/4″ bore and is 28 1/2″ long. The distance from the mouthpiece to the bottom finger hole is 499 mm (19.7″) and the span between finger holes is slightly over 7 1/2 inches. This was one of my early attempts to design a deep-sounding flute that can be played by more average-sized people.
422 – spalted Butternut; G3; $789
Flute 422 is a G3 (low) flute made of spalted Butternut. It has a Claro Walnut / Eastern Red Cedar mouthpiece. The block has a Butternut Whale on Black Walnut / Butternut / Eastern Red Cedar. It has a 1 3/4″ bore and is 33 1/8″ long. The distance from the mouthpiece to the bottom finger hole is 553 mm (21 3/4″) and the span between finger holes is almost 7 1/2 inches.
